The heart is the center of human health: it relates to physical and emotional well-being. In a precedent study, we built an interpretive model of a heart. Like the heart, it has 4 quadrants, 2 ventricles, and a primary and secondary path of circulation. Both sides are a part of the same organ but function separately. This design adapts this approach: two halves united by a shared partition with two main circulatory arteries that branch off into smaller pathways and converge in the central atrium. The main circulatory path is the central exterior passage enclosed on two sides by a glass curtain wall. This inverted façade cuts through the mass, dividing the clinic and skilled nursing functions, but at the same time connects them by providing visibility and a shared space. The exterior façade is a heavy, muscular brick wall that encloses the building and offers a contextual relationship with the “Birmingham” style architecture. The thin membrane of glass appears to cut through the inside of the thick walls, wrapping the building. Along the 3rd Avenue façade is a courtyard. Essentially the positions of the façade and courtyard turn inside-out, allowing them to switch roles of private and public, respectively.
